Leadership and Management Principles
People often talk about leaders and leadership or managers and management, but may know little about the complex aspects and processes of leadership and management. Sometimes we unexpectedly find ourselves in positions of leadership without any preparation. This course examines the functions and purposes of both leadership and management, and explores various approaches of effective leaders and effective managers. Major topics include: the distinguishing traits of management and leadership, four management functions (planning, organizing, leading, controlling), managerial styles and roles, leadership styles (servant leader, coaching, autocratic, transformational, transactional), and fundamental theories of management and motivation. This course will not make you a capable leader or manager, but it will teach you what it takes to become one.
