Engaging History Without Gaps
Expected HS History Courses: World History, U.S. History
Most students take World History and U.S. History in high school—these are expected by most U.S. colleges and required by most U.S. states.
TPS offers these two expected courses in several excellent versions (listed below) to meet a broad range of student goals and interests.
But these two expected survey courses overlook or ignore significant regions and time periods, leaving students with gaps in knowledge and understanding of God’s plan as it has unfolded worldwide over time.
TPS offers a more engaging and complete HS history experience providing a greater understanding of and appreciation for God’s world and people.
Fill History Gaps with Standout Courses: Western History, Asia History
Enjoy further study of fascinating and engaging topics of history and culture.
Learn historical and cultural background for current world issues and events.
Gain greater appreciation for God’s plan for history, culture, and peoples.
Stand out in the college application process with courses that demonstrate wider interests and goals.
This course is a survey of the Western World as it has developed from its inception to the present. The course covers events, ideas, and cultural movements with particular attention to the role and influence of Christianity in the development of the West. Following a Judeo-Christian trajectory, the course starts with Abraham and the Old Testament patriarchs and progresses to the Kingdom of Israel, then to the Roman Empire and the Hellenic world. The trajectory then follows the European kingdoms and the Church through the East-West Schism. After this, the course follows the Western Church to the Renaissance, Reformation, and development of Modern Science, then to the Enlightenment, the rise of nation-states, and the Modern Age. The course concludes by considering the global events of the twentieth century, including two World Wars and the Great Depression, and then a brief discussion of contemporary issues.
This course explores the historical and cultural developments of East Asia (China, Japan, and Korea), South Asia (Indian subcontinent), and Southeast Asia from around 2000 years ago to the present day. Students will actively engage with the art, architecture, literature, technology, customs, religions, and societal structures of these diverse cultures through a series of creative projects and interactive class discussions. The perspectives of individuals within each of these varying cultural and religious contexts will be considered through a biblical worldview. Major periods of study include the rise and fall of the empires and dynasties, the influence of colonization, and the more recent developments of the twentieth century, including nationalism, communism and the Cold War, and modernization. While this course requires some writing, it also features projects and other forms of evaluation to make it more accessible for students who are still developing their writing.
