Have you ever wondered what life was like as a samurai? Have you ever been interested in the myths that influenced ancient Indian peoples? Do you want to explore why the Great Wall was built, or what Cyrus the Great was well known for? In this course, we’ll explore Ancient India, Ancient China, the Mongol Empire, Ancient Japan, Ancient Korea, the Medes and Persians, and the Islamic Empire. What rules governed these peoples? What religious beliefs influenced their families? What artwork did they leave behind? We’ll explore perspective, narrative, theme, imagery and how these enhance our knowledge of the ancient world by reading novels, poetry, and short stories together. Each unit will accompany a focus on writing and composition, through completing reflective writing topics as a way to understand history as a story rather than a list of facts to be memorized. Students will be expected to engage in discussion and complete creative projects as we explore the past together!
