Have you ever wanted to know what life was like while traveling to the New World? Do you want to travel alongside Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad? Would you like to follow Lewis & Clark as they travel out west? Perhaps you want to understand what life was like during the Dust Bowl! This elementary course highlights the following major periods in American history, including Jamestown, the American Revolution, the Civil War and the Underground Railroad, the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression, and WWII. We will follow these periods in history by reading several works of historical fiction to help build a more holistic understanding of what life and culture were like for those who lived during these times. We’ll build our analytical reading skills by exploring the essential building blocks of literature, such as author’s perspective, narrative, theme, plot, figures of speech, imagery, and foreshadowing. Each unit will include a look at the art and music of the times, creative writing assignments, class discussion, and will end with a creative project!
