Course Catalog ID:
4379
Subject Categories:
English Language Arts, Honors, Literature and Media, Writing and Composition
Description

The process of writing the analytical essay is the most important skill set every student needs for success in high school and college. Yet even well-read students who write proficiently still struggle with the analytical essay process. English 3 writing objectives focus on developing literary and rhetorical analysis and written expression skills in order to analyze stories, articles, and film. Students will learn to recognize God’s truth in a variety of settings and character circumstances, both fictional and real. The lively literature discussions include considering the importance of community in To Kill a Mockingbird and It’s a Wonderful Life; solving mysteries with Sherlock Holmes in The Sign of the Four; pondering the complexity of relationships in Shakespeare’s The Tempest; and exploring collaboration and teamwork through one of the course’s “student choice” film options. In this course, students will learn to effectively research and critique sources, analyze textual evidence, form an effective thesis, outline sound arguments, and compose compelling academic essays with proper styling and format. Students systematically learn to develop every step of the analysis-thesis-essay process as well as research techniques, organization methods, and writing style. Students will also engage in a constructive process of self-evaluation and editing. A TPS English 3 course provides an essential foundation for any successive high school English courses at TPS. This course is also particularly good preparation for TPS English 4/5/6 Lit and Comp courses.

“This course has helped me build on the knowledge and skills that I learned in English 2. The course covers a variety of topics from writing and research to poetry and film. For writing, the tireless instructions and feedback from the teachers really helped me to write coherently and analytically. In the various short stories and books that we read, I discovered how the authors’ backgrounds influenced their writing while also seeing the different character types and symbols in the works. Through the films, I learned how directors use production design, cinematography, and other film elements to present the movie’s theme. English 3 gave me much more freedom in writing than English 2 and compelled me to become a stronger, more independent writer. Lastly, I think that the best part of this course was the teacher who enthusiastically taught us and answered our questions in great detail. She truly helped me to understand all of the content and constantly encouraged me to improve my writing. I recommend this course to all who want to improve their reading and writing skills.”

“I’ve taken five English courses with TPS, English 3 being the fifth, and they have been immeasurably helpful. They taught me how to write clearly and concisely which has helped me in so many situations throughout the years. Not only that but TPS English classes have given me a love for writing that has inspired me to write my first novel. TPS provides such amazing teachers to introduce the material and a warm and welcoming atmosphere in which to learn. I would — and already have — recommend TPS English classes to people.”

“This course has helped me to grow in my appreciation for literature and other forms of storytelling, as well as write compelling essays that highlight these literary elements and enable others to see how they matter to the core themes of the story. In addition, learning proper MLA format has allowed me to become a more organised and academically formal writer. I’d recommend this course to anyone who’s looking to improve their academic essay skills and see literature in a whole new light. :)”

“The thorough feedback I received in E3 Justice and Journeys improved my analysis skills by a landslide! During the beginning of the year, I struggled so much with truly analyzing information, not just stating the facts, but at the end of the year, I feel that the course has completely transformed my analysis, like it’s a whole new person writing it. The course’s wonderful attention to detail equipped me with the writing skills I require to take upper-level writing classes.”

“This course pushed me to write far more concisely than ever before, to eliminate the be verbs and passive voice, and to utilize strong diction. At times, this caused some frustration, but the written end result always felt far smoother than it had during the first stages of writing.”

“This course’s material is understandable and exciting. The short stories, poems, and films are fun and keep you engaged. Class time often includes breakout rooms during large writing assignments where students share and receive advice on their work. All in all, this class is great and moves at a good pace, the homework isn’t too heavy, and class time is focused and helpful.”
