Declining Intellectual and Creative Capabilities

For over two decades – and increasing recently – student intellectual and creative capabilities are declining in crucial areas:

• Reading comprehension
• Analytical thinking
• Conceptual understanding
• Problem-Solving skills
• Bible study and knowledge

Distracted and Misled

These creative and intellectual declines may be correlated with:

• Immersion in social media for information, communication, entertainment, relationships and virtually every aspect of life.
• Growing dependence on online (browser or app) information and summaries (including AI) to shortcut reading, research, study, analysis, problem-solving, and writing.
• Misguided expectation that human creativity, ingenuity, talent, analysis, and communication (writing) can be replaced by artificial intelligence.
• Emerging belief in the Church that regular study of the Bible text is no longer essential for gaining truth and wisdom.

Aware and Concerned

Your students probably already know this.

• According to recent surveys, students are aware of and concerned by the impact social media and AI immersion are having on their creative and intellectual capabilities. They have even have come up with a special name for it: Brain Rot
• But students also report they feel helpless to overcome it because it’s the only world they know.
